LOS ANGELES– A California business takes the term “funeral home” literally.

Undertaking LA encourages people to hold home funerals, putting the family in control of the death and mourning process.

The New York Times reports Amber Carvaly and Caitlyn Doughty started the business last summer. They help wash and dress the body, and guide family members through cremation and burial options.

Undertaking LA is a licensed funeral home and inspected by the state of California. They have applied for non-profit status, saying home funerals should be available to anyone. The women said their system keeps costs down.

Hiring a funeral director is only required in 10 states.
