Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring
Spring is coming! America's most iconic weather forecaster, the Pennsylvania groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, "told" this to the president of the groundhog club after not seeing his shadow at Gobbler's Knob in the town northeast of Pittsburgh. Legend dictates that if Phil does not see his shadow on Groundhog Day, there will be early springlike weather. Should you be ready for swimsuit weather by the end of February? Perhaps not. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration pegs Phil's accuracy at about 45%.
Story of Quasimodo, the dog with a rare condition, going viral
Quasimodo, a purebred German shepherd with short spine syndrome, is gaining fans online with his story. On Monday, Secondhand Hounds updated Quasi's 50,000 fans on Facebook on the pup's health and medical treatments. Quasi had his neck clipped and cleaned to help the skin heal from his collar wound and he was neutered. He will be seeing a specialist to fix what is called a screw tail, a vertebrae deformity in the tail. Named after the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" character, Quasi is one of only 13 known dogs in the world with short spine syndrome.
Bill Cosby to ask for sex assault charges to be dropped
Bill Cosby will ask a judge on Tuesday to dismiss a criminal charge alleging that he sexually assaulted a woman in 2004. On December 30 Cosby was charged with one count of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand, one of a long line of accusers who was the first to go to authorities, in 2005. Constand alleges that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in his Pennsylvania home after inviting her there to discuss her professional future.
Man sentenced to 10 years after threatening wife, causing Perry Local Schools lockdown
A Massillon man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after threatening to kill his wife and then threatening to kill himself in the parking lot of a middle school, causing a school district to be placed on lockdown in October. Forrest Edward Sunkle pleaded guilty to attempted murder, aggravated burglary, kidnapping, inducing panic and several other charges before he was sentenced. The incident happened Oct. 19. Perry Local Schools were locked down for about two hours during the ordeal.
