TRUMBULL COUNTY, Ohio-– Tanner Noble is dealing with a lot right now. Last year, the 15-year-old was diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid cancer, and on Monday, he had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic to remove it. The entire procedure lasted about 11 hours.
"They cut out all of my thyroids and lymph nodes because that's where the cancer was,” explained Tanner.
He said his symptoms started showing up during football season. He was losing a ton of weight and got worried. His parents eventually took him to see a specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, and that’s when they found out he had cancer.
"It's not hard to process because I knew something was up. It's just that I didn't know that it was cancer and that it would take this long to figure it out,” he said.
Noble is expected to make a full recovery, although his doctor said he will eventually have to undergo chemotherapy and radiation.
"We know things are going in the right direction, and the question now is how fast can he get better? Young people make amazing recoveries and this is a good example of one,” said Dr. Peter Anderson, a pediatric oncologist for the Cleveland Clinic.
His parents said they’re so impressed with Tanner’s positive attitude. They also appreciate all the support they’ve received from the community and on social media. Someone even created a hashtag called, #TannerTuff.
"It's hard to wrap your head around everything that's happening, you know. All I said to my family was we may need some help with this, and there it went,” said Demetra Noble, Tanner’s mom. “It was just an explosion of outpouring and it was just overwhelming."
Tanner’s dad, Bob Noble, said the same.
"The community backing has just been unbelievable. There has been so much stuff going on and we don't even know where to begin or how to thank people, it's just unbelievable,” he said.
The family is in need of support when it comes to financial help for Tanner's medical expenses.
