MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio– Mayfield Heights police said its beloved K-9 has passed away.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, Duke passed away today.  Police say he faithfully served the department for 8 years– from 2006-2014– along with his partner, Sgt. Tony Mele.

“Duke not only helped us fight crime but he was also the goodwill ambassador for the Police Department. He was great around kids, having participated in K9 demonstrations for an estimated 3,000+ people over his career and had 1,100+ deployments for service in those 8 years with the Department. He will be missed by all those who met him (except for the criminals, of course!).”

Mayfield Heights police say Duke was able to enjoy being a family pet for over a year after he retired. All of the officers will miss him dearly.
