St. Edward defeats Huber Heights Wayne, 45-35

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cole Gest ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 1:19 to play to put Lakewood St. Edward ahead and rushed for 51 yards 12 seconds later as the Eagles defeated Huber Heights Wayne 45-35, earning their second straight Division I title.

The Eagles (14-1) won their third championship since 2010, beating Wayne each time. They won 31-21 last year. Wayne (13-1) was runner-up for the fourth time.

After the first Gest TD, St. Edward recovered an onside kick, and Gest scored on the first play.

St. Edward quarterback Jimmy Keefe passed for 419 yards, tying the Division I title game record.

Wayne trailed 31-14 with 10:43 to play but scored three touchdowns in a 3:28 span, capped by a 1-yard run by Matt Wilcox to go ahead 35-31 with 3:47 left.
