TAYLOR, Michigan -A mother is in serious condition and a 7-year-old girl is dead after they were both shot outside a sports complex in Taylor, Michigan Thursday night.

According to the Taylor Police Department, Emma Watson-Nowling, 7, and her mother Sharon Watson, 37, were shot by Timothy Nelson Obershaw, 57. It is believed Obeshaw was a family friend and shot the two before leaving the parking lot.

Obeshaw also shot himself at the scene and a handgun was found.

Emma was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Detroit, but died later in the evening from her serious head injuries.

Witnesses told the Taylor police that they had seen Obeshaw at Emma’s soccer practice and had seen him at practices in the past.

Police say Obeshaw confronted the mother and daughter, shooting at the child first. He then shot and killed himself.

Police currently have no motive other than family members and witnesses saying that Obeshaw had become paranoid and mentally unstable recently.

“Unfortunately, this man’s apparent mental illness led to a little girl who just wanted to play soccer never going home again,” said Chief of Police Mary Sclabassi.

There is a GoFundMe set up to help with funeral expenses for Emma and medical expenses for her mother.
