PARMA, Ohio - The official name these days is Shoppes at Parma, but everyone knows the place as Parmatown.
In its hey day it was one of the largest indoor shopping malls in Northeast Ohio.
But after four years of reworking and rebuilding what was once a mall in decline, developers say it's now time to open it all up to the sky.
“We are proposing to demolish the enclosed mall we will leave structurally some of the existing mall area and create this U-shaped area.” Developer Roy Williams of PECO Real Estate said.
That U-shaped area will feature a new entrance to JC Penney’s and lots of little stores around it.
It's an open-air concept that the developer says will put a new face on the old mall.
“Kind of a shift in the way consumers are shopping and the types of environments they like to be in when they're doing their shopping." Williams said.
This new proposal would get rid of the last indoor portion of the old Parmatown Mall essentially opening things up to a different way to shop. The company’s previous $80,000,000 dollar investment in the mall has already created outward facing store fronts and up close parking.
This new open face has been great so far for merchants.
Fast Eddie’s restaurant returned to Parma two months ago because they liked what was going on here.
Eddie Cerino says the new $15,000,000 dollar investment should take things to the next level.
“It's been a great two months way above our sales expectations and we love the new concept." Cerino said.
When it first opened in 1956, Parmatown was an outdoor shopping plaza.
It was expanded and turned into an indoor mall with 60 stores in 1965.
If all goes as planned the old mall will be a full outdoor shopping plaza by the middle of 2017.
