EAST GREENBUSH, New York — A man claims he was fired from a Walmart in New York for cashing in empty bottles and cans he collected in the store parking lot.
WNYT reports that Thomas Smith had just gotten out of prison in May after serving 13 years behind bars for robbing a bank. He wanted a job to better his life.
On a day earlier this month, Smith said he was gathering carts at work and collected bottles and cans from the parking lot. He cashed them in for $5.10.
He was later told by store officials that the act was considered stealing and that he was fired. He said he tried giving the money to his manager, but that didn’t help.
A Walmart spokesperson told WNYT that Smith was fired for “gross misconduct” and theft inside the store and that the cans had nothing to do with it.
Since it all happened, there has been an outpouring of support for Smith on social media, including the establishment of a GoFundMe account.
