8-year-old girl dies in Canton house fire

CANTON, OH – An 8-year-old girl is dead after an early morning house fire in Canton.

Just before 7 a.m. Saturday, the Canton Fire Department was called to a  fire on Maddrell Ct, NE. When they arrived, they found the two-story home engulfed in heavy flames inside and outside on the first floor of the building. They were told that a child might have been trapped inside.

Rescue crews fought their way into the blaze and that was when they found 8-year-old Azzie Thomas, dead on the second floor. Azzie’s father, Anthony, mother, Tabitah Merry and her 9-year-old brother Alex all made it out of the fire. They were taken to local hospitals. Another brother, 15-year-old Tony, was not at home at the time of the fire.

Damage estimate to the building is $34,500 and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
