Willoughby Hills police: Knives, shovel and hatchet found during traffic stop

WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio- A Madison man is behind bars after a traffic stop on 271 near White Road Thursday.

According to the Willoughby Hills Facebook page, the officer noticed a bullet proof vest and gun under the driver’s flannel shirt when he approached the vehicle.

Police said, David Hawley, 42,  was ordered to place his hands in the air, in which he complied. The weapon was found to be a pepper gun.

Police stated Hawley also had a 19″ and 9″ knife concealed next to him in the car between the driver’s seat and the center console and a Smith and Wesson hatchet in the compartment in the dash.

There were multiple other knives, a shovel and hammer located in the vehicle and a small amount of marijuana on the passenger’s front seat.

After searching the car, officers said they found several bags packed with survival equipment such as hand warmers snack bars, water, rope and other relevant equipment.

Hawley was arrested at the scene. Charges are pending.
