CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Warrants for child endangering have been filed against two women after a 2-year-old boy was hit up to 22 times with a backscratcher at a Cleveland day care.
Surveillance video captured a day care worker hit the little boy Wednesday. After hitting the boy with the backscratcher, video shows the same worker push him to the ground and hit him again.
About 10 minutes later, the video shows the same day care worker hit the toddler, drag him and then slam him down on a changing table.
An arrest warrant for child endangering says that the worker, Melissa Tate, "did abuse a child...with a wooden back scratcher" then "swings the child by one arm and throws the child onto a changing table." The day care previously said she has been terminated.
Another arrest warrant for child endangering was filed against a second worker, Tonya James, because police say she watched Tate and "did not stop or report the abuse."
The little boy suffered welts and bruises on his legs. His mother and grandmother took him to the hospital Wednesday night. They also called police and filed a report.
In the same surveillance video showing what happened to the little boy, a second worker was seen hitting an 18-month-old girl with a plastic bat. There is no word on any warrants or charges filed in that incident.
