AKRON – Since the Akron Zoo has been open, the first Chilean flamingo chick was born back in late August.
The chick will not be in an exhibit until spring as it will be raised indoors by the zoo staff for the next few months.
The egg was laid on July 25 and put inside an incubator shortly after.
The chick only weighed 96 grams at birth and she began eating about 24 hours after hatching.
She only weighs about two pounds now, so keeping her inside with a shallow pool and heat lamps will allow her to grow more before spring.
The Chilean flamingo is related to the American flamingo and indigenous to South America near the equator.
There are currently 23 Chilean flamingos at the Akron Zoo and have been there since 2004.
