MAPLE HEIGHTS, OH – Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church has a big mess to clean up.

The ceiling in the basement collapsed after the heavy rain on Saturday. Trustee Joe Elkins said they were already dealing with some leaks, and were trying to get them fixed before all of this happened.

"We had been trying to eliminate this problem for a while and we were on the list of three contractors and were just waiting for them to get to us. They're just backed up, so we're just on the list and hopefully someone will help us now,” he said.

The basement is normally used for church activities. It’s also where the kitchen is located. Some areas were spared, same with a lot of valuables.

There was a little bit of damage in the sanctuary upstairs too.

Services will continue as planned and many members have since offered to help with clean up.

"Everyone has been calling each other, so we're standing firm,” said Trustee Patricia Jackson.

The church does have insurance and an adjuster was expected to come out on Sunday.
