Bond set for suspects in murder of Ashtabula mother

ASHTABULA, Ohio- The man accused of killing an Ashtabula mother of four appeared in court on Wednesday.

Kyle M. Starkey beat 36-year-old Mandy Gottschalk to death while Ryan McBride witnessed the crime, according to prosecutors. The pair then hid the woman's body in a closet for days while they partied before burying her in a shallow grave, prosecutors said.

Starkey is charged with murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, gross abuse of a corpse and domestic violence, while McBride faces charges of tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.

On Wednesday, bond was set at $765,000 for Starkey and $75,000 for McBride. Both men pleaded not guilty.

Gottschalk was reported missing on Aug. 17 and her remains were found a week later off of Washington Avenue. She left behind four children, who are now in the care of grandparents.

The Ashtabula community has rallied around the family, with a couple even donating a house to Gottschalk's mother.
