BEREA - People in Northeast Ohio are paying respects to a Broadway star, who died tragically on Friday. Kyle Jean-Baptiste, 21, made history as the first African-American to play the lead role in a Broadway production of 'Les Miserables.'

Sunday night, many at his alma mater, Baldwin Wallace University, were shocked by the loss of the actor. They gathered to remember his life, accomplishments, and talent.

The university released a statement on Saturday:

The BW community is filled with incredible sadness at the loss of one of our own, the gifted and warmhearted Kyle Jean-Baptiste. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this time of great sorrow.

In addition, BW Music Theatre classmates are working with the alumni office to organize a scholarship fund in Kyle's name. Click here for their GoFundMe page.
