School district remembers former Portman intern murdered in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Officials at South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools released a statement Monday about a former student who was shot to death in Washington, D.C., Saturday.

"Matt Shlonsky was a wonderful student at the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools. As a graduate of Brush High School, he will forever be part of the fabric of our school community, and anytime a person's life is shortened, leaving hopes and dreams unfulfilled, it's tragic. This hits even closer to him since he is one of our school district's own. The thoughts are prayers of people in the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools are with Matt's family."

Shlonsky was shot in a drive-by shooting. Police say he was not the intended target and got caught in crossfire. Police are still searching for the shooter.

Shlonsky was a former intern for U.S. Sen. Rob Portman.

He also graduated from American University in 2014.

Shlonsky's former hockey coach said he will be missed.

"The word lost a super superb human being," said Bob Hasinski. "He was meant for great things. Greater than all of us."
