NEW YORK – Morgan Freeman’s step-granddaughter, who was also his goddaughter, was stabbed to death early Sunday morning in New York City, according to the New York Post.

Police say Edena Hines, 33, was stabbed several times on the sidewalk around 3 a.m. Hines’ grandmother was Freeman’s first wife.

When police arrived on scene, they found Hines’ ex-boyfriend standing over her body screaming.

“Get out devils! I cast you out Devils in the name of Jesus Christ! I cast you out!” the 30-year-old man repeatedly said, according to a witness who saw the attack and called 911.

She was transported to a local hospital where she died.

“The world will never know her artistry in talent, and how much she had to offer,” the grieving Freeman said in a statement. “Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”

Her ex-boyfriend was arrested and taken in for a psychiatric evaluation.
