AUSTIN, Texas — A city council member in Austin, Texas, wants to ‘Ban the Box’.

KTBC reports that Greg Casar plans to propose an ordinance that will remove the criminal background question from the first page of job application in Austin.

He said the new rule would prevent potential employers from discriminating against applicants for their criminal histories that may not be “relevant to a job they applied for.”

The rule wouldn’t prevent employers from doing background checks.

Opponents of the proposal say the rules would be detrimental to business growth and opens companies up to civil liability.
