CALIFORNIA – The Honest Company, an eco-friendly company that was founded by actress Jessica Alba and sells all natural products, is not living up to consumers’ expectations when it comes to their sunscreen.
Angry customers have taken to social media with proof of their unhappiness, claiming that the sunscreen, which claims an SPF 30, doesn’t do the job.
The company did respond with this statement to Today:
“Our Sunscreen Lotion was tested, by an independent 3rd party, against the protocols prescribed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) monograph for over-the-counter sunscreen products,” the statement reads. “The results showed that our product is effective and safe for use as an 80 minute water-resistant (FDA’s highest rating), SPF 30 sunscreen lotion in accordance with FDA regulations when used as directed … The number of complaints received on our own website about our Sunscreen Lotion constitute less than one half of one percent of all units actually sold at honest.com. We stand behind the safety and efficacy of this product.”
The Honest Company sunscreen appeals to people who want natural products in their sunscreen. It gets its broad spectrum protection from zinc oxide and not through chemicals such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, and ecamsule, which are found in many other brands.
But in testing the sunscreen, reporters at NBC5 in Chicago found discrepancies between the product’s description and its actual content. The company claims that the sunscreen contains 20 percent non-nano zinc oxide, but after testing, the reporters found that some tubes of the product contained as little as 9.3 percent.
Honest explained that after reducing the zinc, it added other ingredients to make the sunscreen effective.
The bottom line: doctors say that even though you have second thoughts about the chemicals used in sunscreen, everyone should be using it. The risk of UV rays is much greater than any risk posed by the chemicals being used in the sunscreens.
