Back to School

There are four things you should start doing right now to help your family get ready for back-to-school! Dr. Elaine Schulte, Pediatrician from The Cleveland Clinic explained how to “prep.”

How to P.R.E.P. for school:

Pencil in your pediatrician.

Do your children require back to-school check-ups? Make your appointment now for any immunizations or sports physicals needed.

TIP: Do you have any concerns about their growth, nutrition, development, behavior or learning capabilities? Use annual wellchecks as an opportunity to discuss them with your pediatrician.

Return to a healthy sleeping and eating schedule.

Families’ regular routines get a bit off track in the summer.

Remember, school-aged children ages 6 to 12 need 10 to 11 hours of sleep per night, and kids 12 to 18 should get 9 hours. Also, make sure kids eat a wholesome breakfast every morning as their brains need fuel to learn.

TIP: Start inching your way back to the norm at least 7-10 days before the first day of school.

Establish outdoor safety guidelines.

Being active and independent is critical to your children’s overall health. If they walk or take the bus, plan a “school safety route” (an approved daily way to and from home) and take a few trial runs.

TIP: Take your children on a field trip to the school playground. Watch them play and discuss how to properly use the equipment and enforce playground rules.

Practice hand washing.

A simple strategy for keeping your kids well? Teach them to wash their hands and wrists for 20 seconds to get rid of germs — such as common cold and flu viruses.
