Mother killed, baby injured when car hits Amherst house

AMHERST, Ohio -- A mother was killed when a car hit a house in Amherst Tuesday morning.

A 23-year-old woman told the Ohio State Highway Patrol she saw an animal in the road and tried to avoid it. Her car went off of state Route 58, through a field and into the living room of a house on Leavitt Road.

Troopers said the car hit Debra Majkut, 34, and her 6-month-old son. Majkut died instantly.

The 11-year-old brother, a cousin and an neighbor were able to rescue the baby.

The child was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. His injuries are considered non-life threatening and he is in stable condition.

The highway patrol said the accident is still under investigation.
