It happened at about 6:30 p.m. on Nome Avenue near Lawton Street.

According to police, the dog was in the front yard when the suspect walked up and fired four shots at the animal.  The dog's owner, Daryl Evege, told Fox 8 News Rio suffered three gunshot wounds; two to the hind quarters and one to the stomach.

Officers found four shell casings in the street.

Evege described his 140-pound Presa Canario as a gentle giant that loves tummy rubs, kisses and Popsicles. He said he used next month's rent to pay for the 7-year-old dog's surgery.
