On Wednesday, Perry Township police arrested Eric J. Spaulding on two counts of sexual battery, which is a third-degree felony. The 31-year-old Canton man was suspended from his teaching duties in April and later resigned.

The Massillon City Prosecutor's Office said Spaulding was having consensual sex with an 18-year-old student, who was a senior at the time. Under the Ohio Revised Code, it is illegal for a teacher or school employee to engage in sexual activity with a student.

According to the Perry Local School District website, Spaulding started teaching English at Perry High School in 2008. In 2012, he was named head coach of the high school swimming and diving teams.

The prosecutor's office said they do not believe the victim was a member of the aquatics team.
