AVON LAKE, Ohio- It came as a bit of a  surprise to people: Miller Road Park beach in Avon Lake was closed to the public Friday.

"It's kind of sad. It's a nice beach here.  It's always crowded," said Freddy Hothan, of Avon Lake.

A day of swimming turned into a day of fishing for the Hothan family of Avon Lake.

"I prefer to go to Miller Road Park.  We went half a dozen times last year. Instead of going to a public pool, I prefer going here," said his wife, Carrie.

"At Miller Road Park, just the beach access is closed.  Everything else is open, the pier is open, the launch is open.  Just the access to the beach because we don't have a beach anymore," said Lt. Sean Bockelman with the Avon Lake Police Department.

Lt. Bockelman said the decision to close is a safety measure. Recent weather reduced the beach by nearly 100 percent and the forecast indicates more northerly winds that will allow the pattern to continue.

"The water has risen to the level that it's bypassed the beach and there's nothing there for people to walk on. We don't want them walking and not knowing what is underneath," said Lt. Bockelman.

And while the beach may be closed at Miller Road Park, less than a mile down the road Veterans Park Beach is open to the public.

Miller Road Beach will remain closed until further notice.
