AKRON - Akron City Council President Garry Moneypenny has been sworn in as Akron's 60th mayor.

He is following former mayor Don Plusquellic, who announced his resignation earlier this month. It will become effective at midnight on May 31.

Moneypenny said that if fighting for the rights of residents and fighting for the people who fought for him compares him to Plusquellic, he would take that comparison any day.

Plusquellic had served the city for 40 years and said he wishes the best for Akron.

“I hope they know that I did my best and truly cared for our City.  And they will know why I will never apologize for fighting for Akron residents to get the jobs and the education they need, or for simply telling the truth,” Plusquellic said.
