OXON HILL, Maryland — Two students from Northeast Ohio have made it into the semifinals of the 88th Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Owen Kovalik, 12, is a sixth grader at Medina Christian Academy. He plays four instruments: the violin, piano, clarinet and recorder.

Melina Gabele, 13, attends Mater Dei Academy. She likes science and competed in the spelling bee last year, too.

They’ll face off against the other semifinalists at 10 a.m. The top 12 who don’t miss a word in the semifinals will make the finals.

Then the finals will take place at 8 p.m.
