Here’s your guide to Memorial Day 2015

CLEVELAND — It’s the unofficial start of summer: the long Memorial Day weekend! And it’s a busy, fun time for all of us in northeast Ohio. Parades, festivals, fairs, concerts … here’s a list of everything that’s going on this holiday weekend.

Festivals:

2015 Marc’s Great American Rib Cook-Off and Music Festival – Rib lovers rejoice! Ribs and music will be on the menu at Jacobs Pavilion in the Flats. The hours are:

  • Monday, May 25: (Memorial Day) 12:00pm – 8:00pm

The Berea National Rib Cookoff – Will be held at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds through Monday.  Here are the times:

  • Monday: 11a.m. – 7p.m.

Tremont Greek Fest: Get your Greek on! This is the 45th Annual Greek Fest and it’s full of good food, fun and entertainment.  Hours are:

  • Monday:  Noon – 9 p.m.

Blossom Time Festival: Chagrin Falls’ traditional festival, highlighted by a hot air balloon launch, Taste of Chagrin and a parade. It runs all weekend, and events are always going on! Click here to find out where and when it’s all happening.

Other fun:

Playhouse Square has a full weekend of theater fun, including performances of “Fairfield” and “Memphis”. Click here for specific shows and times.

Cedar Point: This weekend the park is hosting Armed Forces Weekend. Any military member, veteran or honorably-discharged member can get in for free with their valid I.D. Family can also get a 22 dollar discount throughout the weekend. The opening of the Soak City amusement park also opens this weekend.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo: is starting KidsDays on Memorial Day Weekend. KidsDays features special activities, guest stars, costumed characters and all your favorite animals.

Cities:

Aurora: An American Legion ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Veterans’ Memorial Park. The parade will follow at around 10 a.m. Click here for the Aurora website.

Bay Village: The American Legion Memorial Day Parade steps off at 8:45 a.m. on Memorial Day from Huntington Park. At 9:45 a.m. there will be ceremonies at Cahoon Park. At 10:45 a.m., The Bay Village Memorial Foundation will hold a program.  Click here for the parade route and details.

Bedford: The Bedford Veterans Memorial Day Parade Committee will sponsor the Memorial Day ceremonies for Bedford, Bedford Heights, Walton Hills, and Oakwood Village on Monday, May 25, 2015 beginning at 10:15 a.m. The Parade begins at Bedford City Hall. Ceremonies will be held at Bedford Public Square on Broadway and conclude at the Bedford Cemetery on Broadway.

Berea:The city’s parade will be held Monday from 10:30 – 12:30. Click here to head to the city’s newsletter for more information.

Brecksville: The Memorial Day observance will begin at 10:30 am on Monday with the parade (step off is at City Hall and the parade ends at Highland Drive Cemetery). Click here for the city’s newsletter, which has more information.

Broadview Heights:  is holding a parade that steps off at Broadview from The Crossings Shopping Center (Broadview and Royalton Roads) at 9 a.m. It proceeds south to the Broadview Center and everyone is invited to follow the parade back to the Broadview Center for a ceremony and complimentary refreshments. Cleveland Heights:The annual Memorial Day event will be held on Monday, May 25th at 10:30 am at the Veteran’s Memorial across from the Community Center in Cumberland Park.

Elyria’s: Parade Day is held on Memorial Day Monday. Participants meet on Second St. next to the First Congregational Church. Families are welcome to attend. Click here to head to Elyria’s page.

Euclid: will begin its parade at 10 a.m. on Monday starting at Lakeshore Blvd., heading south down East 222nd Street. There will be memorial services at the Veterans Memorial Next to City Hall following the Parade. Click here for details and for more service times and locations.

Fairview Park: On Memorial Day, We Do Care will hold its annual observance in the rotunda at City Hall at 8:00 am.   Following this, at approximately 9:00 am, the annual parade will step off from Corrigan Craciun Funeral Home at West 208 Street and Lorain Road. The parade will end at the  Fairview Park Cemetery where the Legion will honor all veterans. An open house at the American Legion Hall on Lorain Road follows the ceremony. Garfield Heights: will host a special Memorial Day commemoration at 10 a.m., Monday, May 25, 2015 at the Veterans Plaza at the Garfield Heights Civic Center, (5407 Turney Road). Please note that due to construction on Turney Road, there will be no Memorial Parade this year along Turney Road and we will not be marching to the Veterans Memorial Island at Garfield Boulevard. The entire service will take place at the Civic Center Veterans Plaza.

Green: Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast, sponsored by Green Fire Local 2964, begins at 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Fire Station #1(4200 Massillon Road).   The Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Green High School, (1474 Boettler Road). A Memorial Day Ceremony begins at 12 p.m. at the Green Veterans Memorial Park, 1900 Steese Road. The Community Picnic and Car Show begins immediately following the Memorial ceremony at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the John Torok Community/Senior Center, adjacent to the Green Veterans Memorial Park. Hudson:  will hold its parade starting at 10 a.m. at Milford Road and Veterans Way. Click here for more parade details.

Independence: The parade will assemble on the town square at 9 a.m. Click here for details on the parade and where to meet afterwards.

Lorain: has a parade Monday at 10 a.m. It begins at 17th and Broadway. Click here for details.

Medina: The city’s Memorial Day festivities begin at the Medina County Courthouse on Public Square. There will be a brief ceremony at 10 am and a parade to Spring Grove Cemetery and guest speaker.

Mentor: The city’s parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. Monday  from Heinen’s, 8850 Mentor Avenue and proceeds down Hopkins Road to Mentor Municipal Cemetery.

Shaker Heights: On Monday, from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., the day begins with a ceremony followed by a parade that finishes at Thornton Park. Click here for details on the picnic afterwards and the parade route.

Stow: will hold a Memorial Day Program at Stow Cemetery at 3162 Kent Road on Monday, May 25, 2015.  The program will begin at 10:15 a.m. and should last about one hour. Click here for all the details.

Strongsville: The annual Memorial Day parade,  steps off at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph Church and heads south on Pearl to Zverina Drive. It will end at the Freedom Trail gazebo with a short ceremony, including remarks by Mayor Tom Perciak. Click here for more information.

University Heights: has scheduled their parade for Monday at 11 a.m. Details will be available by clicking here.

Westlake: Westlake’s annual Memorial Day parade kicks off at Westlake Christian Church, 25800 Hilliard Boulevard and proceeds east to Clague Park where a dedication ceremony takes place. Click here to go to Westlake’s special events page.

Wickliffe: steps off at Euclid Avenue at Worden Road at 10 a.m., continues west to Bishop Road and ends at Wickliffe City Hall, with a memorial service on the front lawn of City Hall. For information, click here.

Willoughby: The parade will start Monday at 9:30 a.m. in downton Willoughby. Ceremonies will follow the parade and everything will be held rain or shine.  Click here for details.

Lake View Cemetery: will hold its annual Memorial Day Observance, in front of the James A. Garfield Memorial will include a marching band, the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard, and the James A. Garfield Camp #142 Sons of the Union Veterans in period dress. The parade starts at 10:15 a.m. and the Memorial Service begins at 1:30 p.m. at Lake View’s Community Mausoleum.  Click here for details.

Riverside Cemetery: Memorial Day Service honoring those who protect our freedom. Monday, May 25, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. at the cemetery’s Veteran’s Flagpole (3607 Pearl Road, Cleveland).
