HUDSON, Ohio -- Two crashes closed lanes and slowed traffic Monday morning on the Ohio Turnpike.

The initial crash happened near mile marker 182 in Hudson just after 8 a.m. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a tow truck driver was loading a disabled car onto his wrecker when he was struck by a semi tractor-trailer.

The tow truck operator, identified as 56-year-old Michael Kennedy, of Ravenna, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was an employee of Interstate Towing of Macedonia.

Crews were still working at the scene when the driver of a Hummer rear-ended another vehicle in the same area. The Hummer caught fire, but the driver was able to get out. There is no word on the condition of the second driver involved.
