CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) — What makes a restaurant the hottest destination in town?

Glowing Yelp reviews, Instagram-worthy presentation and high praise from critics and food bloggers go a long way. But among chefs and restaurateurs, nothing says you’ve made it like a James Beard Award.

Chef Jonathon Sawyer of Cleveland’s Greenhouse Tavern won for best chef in the Great Lakes region. Chef and restaurant winners were announced Monday night at Lyric Opera in Chicago. Sawyer was the only nominee in the category who was not from the Chicago area.

Sawyer posted on Twitter that he forgot to thank his mother, Becky, and fellow chef and mentor, Michael Symon.

Sawyer’s wife and business partner, Amelia, posted her congratulations on Instagram and Facebook.

In 2010, Sawyer was named a best new chef by Food & Wine Magazine. He’s appeared on Food Network shows like “Iron Chef America” and “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” He also owns Noodlecat and Trentina.

This was Sawyer’s fourth nomination for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region, but his first win.

Sawyer is a frequent guest on Fox 8 News in the Morning.

Since 1990, the not-for-profit James Beard Foundation, named after “the father of American cuisine,” has been honoring outstanding names in the food and beverage industry. There is no cash reward, but a win — or even a nomination — can substantially increase the buzz for business.
