Alcohol a factor in fatal crash involving 86-year-old driver

OTTAWA COUNTY, OH – Police say that alcohol was a factor with an 86-year-old driver in a fatal crash in Ottawa County.

The crash occurred at 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Salem Carroll Road and Behlman Road. A van driven by 86-year-old James Swift, Sr., of Oak Harbor failed to yield at a stop sign and was hit by a pickup truck driven by Chris Lawley, 26, also of Oak Harbor. The van was pushed off the road and overturned.

James Swift and Lawley were both wearing seat belts, and were taken to hospitals.

The passenger in the van, Mark A. Swift, 66, from Oak Harbor, OH was not wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police reports, “alcohol was a factor in this crash on the part of James E. Swift Sr.” The crash is still under investigation, and charges are pending at this time.
