CLEVELAND (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an unknown substance in Lake Erie near Cleveland.

A Coast Guard spokesman said Saturday that the Forest City Yacht Club in Cleveland reported the substance in its basin on Friday. Contractors from Clean Harbors were on the scene Friday into Saturday to investigate and conduct any necessary cleanup.

Marine Safety Unit Cleveland pollution responders are trying to determine the source of the substance that the Coast Guard says covers an area roughly 50 by 100 yards.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Yaw says efforts that began Friday to contain the substance inside the basin continued Saturday. He says samples of the substance have been sent for testing. But he says such testing takes time and he could not say when results would be available.
