PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The police chief in Painesville is warning residents of that city about a suspected fundraising scam using the Painesville Fire Department’s name.

Chief Anthony Powalie wrote on the police department Facebook page that he has become aware of phone calls that talk about a Painesville Fire Department fundraiser. The caller ID on the calls lists the name and number of “Mead West Vaco 434.352.6107”.  According to the chief, the only fundraising done for the fire department is through the Painesville Safety Forces Foundation.

He is forwarding the information on the suspicious calls to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, but wants residents to know that although the answering machine at that number states that they are a “firefighter support group”….they are NOT supporting the Painesville Fire Department.
