MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — A 13-year-old boy is finally on the road to recovery after a mystery illness battered his body with several maladies.
Today reports that Bobby Leithauser was healthy until about the age of 9, when his problems all started. First he began getting severe stomach-aches after eating, then headaches and tremors and he eventually couldn’t control his body temperature or blood pressure.
He began losing his eyesight and had to use a wheelchair. Doctors diagnosed him with a disorder affecting his ligaments and another that affected digestion and blood pressure regulation. But he still had other problems.
His mom, Keri, turned to the Internet hoping to find out for herself what was wrong. She found stories of other children with the same issues, and a doctor at Cohen Children’s Medical center in New York.
He performed scans on Bobby, and immediately knew what was wrong.
It turns out Bobby had Chiari Malformation, which affects the cerebellum, and his skull and spine were not connected in the right way.
After a six-hour operation, Bobby’s symptoms immediately improved.
“To me, it’s a miracle,” Bobby’s dad told Today.
