CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A hit and run driver who hid from police for nearly a year was sentenced Thursday to one year in jail.

Jerome Lee was the driver in the crash that took the life of 5-year-old Israel Thornton, who was struck and killed at the corner of West 37th Street and Denison Avenue. Thornton was walking to the school bus with his older cousin at the time.

For nearly a year, the identity of the driver remained a mystery.

A bus camera captured an image of the vehicle involved in the hit-skip, and a tip finally led investigators to Lee, who was already behind bars for something else.

Thursday, a judge accepted a plea deal and sentenced Lee to one year in jail.

Thornton's family did address the court before the sentencing.
