SHAKER HEIGHTS – Faith and a strong sense of togetherness best describes St. Dominic School in Shaker Heights. It is this week’s Fox 8 Cool School.
Growing together with Christ is the philosophy at St. Dominic Catholic School. This year, the students are building on the theme to care for all God's creation. “This means to our school that we are always sticking up for each other and looking out for each other. The older grades are paired with the younger grades and they're called Prayer Partners and we pray together and we do certain activities with each other," eighth grader Sophia Pastore said.
St. Dominic is small by design. There is only one class per grade, kindergarten through eighth grade. They are also a National Blue Ribbon School. The students excel in academics, with a strong emphasis on writing. St. Dominic placed first in the recent district competition of the Power of the Pen. "The expectations here are high. We want good writers to come out of Saint Dominic. We work hard here. We have a strong curriculum. Everybody here does their best,” eighth grader Jackson Helm added.
Every student has technology class once a week. They learn to do their lessons on laptops and i-Pads. This was the first class at St. Dominic School to take the new state mandated assessment tests -- all online. That shows the importance of incorporating technology in the classroom. Fifth grader Shondo Green finds working with computers fun. “So far this year we learned on Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Publisher. We used all of them in our curriculum," he said.
These students are practicing for the St. Dominic Show. The musical performance has been a tradition at the school for the past 55 years. "It brings the whole school together and it kind of teaches us like how to work together as a whole school," sixth grader Kaitlin Ashby said.
And, it is that togetherness that makes St. Dominic stand out as a Fox 8 Cool School.
