Mass murderer Charles Manson won’t be getting married after all.

It was announced last year that Manson, 80, had gotten a license to marry 27-year-old Afton Elaine Burton. She reportedly left her Midwestern home nine years ago and moved to Corcoran, Calif., to be near Manson.

But the New York Post reports the engagement was all a scheme by Burton to profit by putting Manson’s corpse on display after he dies.

Journalist Daniel Simone, co-author of the book”The Retrial of Charles Manson,” tells the New York Post that Burton and a friend planned to put Manson’s body in a glass crypt, hoping to draw people from around the world.

“He’s finally realized that he’s been played for a fool,” Simone told the New York Post, adding Manson believes he is immortal anyway.

Simone said the scheme dates back about two years. He said Burton and her friend originally asked Manson to sign papers that would allow her to take his body when he dies. Simone said Manson didn’t give them an answer, but “strung them along” because they would bring him toiletries and other items to the jail.

Burton apparently realized Manson would never sign the papers, so she proposed they get married. Under California law, being married to Manson would mean she would be given possession of his remains after his death.

Simone doesn’t feel Manson would have married Burton anyway.
