Charges filed in wrong-way driver crash involving police cruiser

policeMIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio — Charges were filed on Monday in the crash involving a wrong-way driver and a Middleburg Heights police officer, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The suspect has been identified as 47-year-old Georges Y. Abboud, of Westlake . The officer involved in the crash has been identified as Randy Cowie, 35.

The crash happened at about 1 a.m. Sunday, when a 2015 BMW was entering I-71 northbound on the southbound exit. The BMW collided head-on with a Middleburg Heights police officer.

Both the officer and Abboud of the BMW were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Abboud was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence.
