Sandusky, Ohio (AP) — Police say an officer in northern Ohio slipped on the ice during a drug search and accidentally shot himself in the hip.

Authorities in Sandusky say the bullet only grazed the officer’s hip and that he had just minor skin abrasions.

A Sandusky police sergeant says the detective was at the front of a group when they were executing a search warrant Thursday night.

He says the detective had his weapon out of his holster and pointed down toward the ground when he fell on the ice.

Police Sgt. Dana Newell tells the Sandusky Register that the bullet struck a screw on the officer’s holster and then hit his leather belt.
