COLUMBUS, Ohio — IKEA announced Tuesday plans to open a store in Columbus in summer of 2017, but that doesn’t mean Cleveland is out of the running for a store in the future.

It was reported in December that IKEA signed a contract to buy 16 acres of land in Brooklyn, Ohio, with an eye on a possible store in NE Ohio. At that time, the company had not officially purchased any land in the Cleveland area.

Tuesday, IKEA spokesperson Joseph Roth said there is no time frame or location for any future Cleveland store. But a Columbus store doesn’t preclude Cleveland from getting one, he said.

Roth said the area is big enough to support its own IKEA, plus Cleveland has a different trade area than Columbus.

As far as the Columbus plans, IKEA is submitting plans to the city for the store, which would be located in the Polaris Centers of Commerce development. The 354,000-square-foot store will be built on 33 acres of land in the northeastern corner of Interstate 71 and Gemini Place.

According to a release from IKEA, store plans would reflect the same design used at existing stores.

“We look forward to continue growing our Midwestern U.S. presence with IKEA Columbus,” said IKEA U.S. CEO Rob Olson in the release. “This location in such a vibrant retail corridor would provide our already 155,000 Columbus customers their own store and introduce the unique IKEA shopping experience to other consumers throughout Central Ohio and beyond.”

IKEA has 40 stores in the U.S. The only other Ohio location is in West Chester. Other nearby locations are in Pittsburgh and Canton, Mich.
