OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio- This week’s Fox 8 Cool School has a reputation for achieving academic excellence. The goal at Olmsted Falls Intermediate School is to provide a well-rounded learning experience for its fourth and fifth graders.
There is a very active approach to academics at the school. For example, students don't just learn science; they 'do' science. The Science Olympiads find creative ways to solve problems. "There's a lot of different clubs. There's catapult; there's building K'NEX cars; there's sinking ships. It's fun to be in because first of all you learn how to build stuff and second of all you just have fun at school," fourth grader Meghan McDonough said.
Compass learning puts students on an individualized path, tailored to their specific needs. And, the work is done on laptops. “Compass learning is where kids go and learn about subjects and get better at it. And, they have fun and learn at the same time and it's a great educational website,” fourth gader Roger Thoma added.
And, while it is great to incorporate technology in learning, the students still pick up a good book and read. Readers’ workshop is part of the curriculum. It involves guided reading in small group settings to individualized reading. The importance is placed on learning comprehension. "Every day from 1 o'clock to 2:30 we have Language Arts. And, usually for the last half an hour we can go to our nooks and independently read,” said fourth grader Grace Kolesar.
Olmsted Falls Intermediate School prides itself on being a hands-on place to learn. Now, it can add being a Fox 8 Cool School to its achievements!
