ELYRIA, Ohio- The man accused of stealing an ambulance from an Elyria hospital was arrested on Monday.

Police said Donald M. Shay, 32, jumped into an ambulance parked in the emergency room area of University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center on Dec. 20. Part of the joyride was captured on the vehicle’s dash cam.

“They had just unloaded a patient, so the doors were still open. Everything was open in the back; everything was open up front and the vehicle was running,” said Herb de la Porte, vice president of Lifecare Ambulance, Inc.

Shay ditched the ambulance on Taylor Street near Elyria’s border with North Ridgeville and ran from officers, police said.

He’s been hospitalized since and was arrested on theft charges as he was leaving St. John’s Medical Center.

There was little damage to the ambulance and it is back in service.
