On average, Americans gain one pound during the holiday season, between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

The study said people who sit around more often will pack on an additional half a pound. But being active doesn’t give you a free pass to eat whatever you want.

“You can’t out-exercise a really bad diet,” said Heather Mangieri, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
