FBI contacts Tower City about ‘The Interview’ screening, threats
CLEVELAND- “The Interview’’ will finally hit a handful of U.S. movie theaters Christmas Day, including a theater right here in Northeast Ohio.
This all comes as the FBI is warning theaters screening the movie of potential threats.
Tower City Cinemas in downtown Cleveland is among more than 200 theaters that will now show “The Interview” beginning Christmas Day.
“We originally had the film booked to open as of last week then Sony pulled it from release,” said David Huffman, director of marketing for Cleveland Cinemas, which owns Tower City Cinemas.
Huffman said the cinema learned the movie was back Thursday so they went back to their original plan.
“I was very happy we were able to play it because I was worried that people wouldn’t have access to a film. And I don’t like if people aren’t allowed to make their own decisions on what they are allowed to see,” said Huffman.
“I’m going to come see the movie tomorrow because North Korea don’t put no fear in my heart,” said Wallace Hester, of Cleveland.
And Wallace is not alone.
Several hundred tickets for the movie have already been sold.
This comes despite the fact the FBI recently contacted Tower City Cinemas to inform them of possible threats they could face by screening the movie.
“We always have security here and our security team has touched base with police in Tower City. We’ve talked to the city police as well. We told them we’re playing the film and if additional precautions are needed, we’ll take them,” Huffman said.
“The Interview” was set to release on Christmas Day, but Sony Pictures pulled the plug after a hacker threatened terror attacks against theaters that show the movie.
The movie, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, centers on a fictitious plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“Normally, a film like this would be in theaters all across Cleveland, but now it’s only playing in one. So, if people want to see it, they will have to come here to Tower City to see it,” Huffman said.
Tower City Cinemas said the Interview will play at the Cinemas throughout the month of December. The movie will also be available to watch via YouTube starting Wednesday.
