MONTGOMERY TWP., OH — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a pair of crashes on Saturday evening where a driver reportedly fell from a bridge.

The first crash happened around 6:17 p.m. when the driver of a  Chevrolet Cobalt was struck from behind by a Chevrolet Equinox while attempting to enter the right lane of I.R. 71 from the berm.

Authorities say the driver of the Equinox, Benjamin Ferrell, 34 of Dover, New Hampshire, exited his vehicle after the crash.

The second crash occurred when a driver stopped behind the Equinox, but was rear ended by a Honda. That Honda was then rear ended by a Mazda, causing the first car to hit Ferrell’s Equinox.

Only minor injuries were reported in the second crash.

Troopers and the Ashland Fire Department responded to the scene and could not locate Ferrell.

They returned to the scene around 11:26 p.m. and searched the area, where they found Ferrell under the bridge in mud and water. Authorities say it appeared he fell from the bridge deck during the second crash.

He was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center with serious injuries.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
