Actor Stephen Collins:’ I did something terribly wrong that I deeply regret’
For the first time since allegations surfaced against him, actor Stephen Collins is addressing the issues publicly.
Back in October, TMZ released an audio tape of 67-year-old Collins in which he revealed details during a 2012 therapy session of inappropriate sexual contact with 11, 12 and 13 year olds.
The tape was allegedly made by actress Faye Grant as she and Collins were going through a divorce.
Collins has released an exclusive statement to PEOPLE in which he admitted to inappropriate sexual conduct with the three female minors.
The 67-year-old statement to PEOPLE read in part, “Forty years ago, I did something terribly wrong that I deeply regret. I have been working to atone for it ever since. ”
Collins said in the thousand word statement he decided to address the issue after the recording was made public. Collins said the session was recorded without his therapist’s or his knowledge.
In his statement he also said, “On the recording, I described events that took place 20, 32, and 40 years ago,” Collins continues. “The publication of the recording has resulted in assumptions and innuendos about what I did that go far beyond what actually occurred. As difficult as this is, I want people to know the truth.”
Collins will sit down with Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric for an in-depth interview based on his statement to PEOPLE.
The interview will stream on Yahoo! and air Friday on 20/20.
