Two local schools are closed Thursday due to sickness.

St. Rita’s in Solon is closed due to illness Thursday. According to school officials, on Wednesday over 110 students were absent from the primary and middle school building suffering from fever, nausea and coughing. Over the next day and a half, the school’s maintenance staff is cleaning and sanitizing the school to prevent the spread of the virus.

St. Rita’s will also be closed Friday.

Meanwhile, University School’s Shaker Heights campus was closed Wednesday and Thursday, according to its website, due to a “considerable” outbreak of flu. The announcement says the strain appears to be resistant to this season’s flu shot, and about 90 students are absent.

“We feel the only responsible thing to do is to close school for tomorrow and Thursday,” it states.

Athletic contests and practices are also canceled.

The announcement states: “Please be vigilant regarding your child’s symptoms. Please do not send your child to school unless he has been fever-free for a good 24 hours. This flu appears highly contagious, and we will be right back where we started if students show up on Friday with flu.”

St. Ambrose in Brunswick was closed Wednesday due to the flu.
