Driver charged in deadly crash on State Route 44

CHARDON TWP., Ohio – A man is charged in a deadly accident that happened on State Route 44 in Chardon Township just before 9 a.m. Monday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the driver of one car tried to pass another car. He went left of center and struck another vehicle. The 35-year-old driver from Mentor was killed in the crash.

Authorities said Mauricio G. Dasilva, 30, of Painesville, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. When he was released, he was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, improper passing, and driving under suspension. He was taken to the Geauga County Jail.

State Route 44, south of Hosford Rd in Chardon Township, was closed in both directions.

The crash remains under investigation.
