Officer remembered: Friends and family honor off-duty officer killed

AKRON — Friends and family are honoring an Akron police officer who was killed while off-duty at an Akron bar early Sunday morning.

Officer Justin Winebrenner, 32, had attended a charity event before heading to Papa Don’s Pub on East Market Street. Police say the incident happened there around 2 a.m.

Winebrenner was the father of a 4-year-old daughter and a seven year veteran of the Akron Police Department.

Sunday morning, the flag was at half staff at Papa Don’s Pub.

Signs were placed along the rail of the establishment honoring Winebrenner.

    To officer Winebrenner’s family, I am so sorry on the tragic loss of Justin and I know what i say won’t bring him back, May god comfort you at this time.
