NEW JERSEY — A New Jersey judge has sided with a 21-year-old woman, ordering her parents to pay $16,000 this year for her college education.
Caitlyn Ricci sued her biological parents. She wants them to pay for out-of-state tuition at Temple University, according to ABC 7 News.
Caitlyn’s parents say their daughter is a typical rebellious teen and moved out of her mother’s home and in with her grandparents, refusing to follow her parents’ rules. Caitlyn’s attorney however, says Caitlyn was thrown out of the home by her mother.
A judge turned to a New Jersey precedent known as “Newburgh.” It says that divorced parents, regardless of their child’s age, may be required to contribute to his or her education.
ABC 7 reports that Caitlyn’s parents say they are willing to pay for their daughter’s education in state, as long as she follows rules and lives at home.
