Suspect identified in officer-involved shooting in Akron

AKRON- Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Orrin Street in Akron that happened just after 5 p.m. Monday.

Police were called to investigate two suspicious men. The caller stated the the suspects could possibly be casing the neighborhood.

Two officers in separate police vehicles responded and confronted the men.

According to Akron police, 29-year-old Raupheal Thomas became very confrontational with the officers. The officers tried to take him into custody. Police say during a struggle, shots were fired. Thomas was taken to Akron General Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy determined the cause of death for Raupheal was a gunshot wound to the torso.

Officers found a handgun at the scene.

The second suspect was interviewed and released.

Police say both officers suffered minor injuries during the struggle. The officer involved in the shooting is a 15-year veteran of the Akron Police Department. Per procedure, he will placed on paid administrative leave.
